The Purpose of This Conference
We may start from the consideration that metaphysics is the science of the absolute and of everything related to the absolute. This way of contemplating metaphysics provides a view of the relativistic and skeptical option in current society and culture.
Is there one metaphysics or many? If it is the science of the absolute, there is only one metaphysics. It should be recalled that metaphysics has been presented in many ways. Today an effort must be made to approach a metaphysics which has been properly formed as a science.
What characteristics must metaphysics possess in order not to be reduced to an abstract, gnostic, disembodied, uncommitted discourse?
A well-formed metaphysics must provide unity, direction, and meaning for all sciences, constituting the immediate foundation for the experiential sciences involving vivence and the ultimate foundation for the experimental sciences involving measurement.
We cannot dispense with metaphysical language. If mathematical formulation is the language of the experimental sciences dealing with nature, metaphysical definition is the language of the experiential sciences dealing with the spirit.
Why do ideologies distort metaphysical language? It is necessary to know what the structure of ideologies is in order to de-ideologize human thought and behavior, which should emerge from profound reflection and ontological commitment.
If we cannot dispense with metaphysics, we must consider how it should be presented to the mentality and sensibility of the twenty first century.
